MTD Income Tax — answered simply
Plain-English answers to the questions landlords and sole traders ask us most.
What is MTD for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) requires self-employed people and landlords to keep digital records and send HMRC a quarterly summary of their income and expenses, followed by a final declaration at year end. It replaces the traditional self-assessment return.
Who does MTD for Income Tax apply to?
Initially, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above the threshold set by HMRC. CalCal is built for both groups, so whichever applies to you, you are covered.
When does MTD Income Tax start?
HMRC is rolling it out in phases from April 2026. The date that applies to you depends on your income level and business type. CalCal will be ready when your mandate begins.
What is a quarterly update?
Four times a year you send HMRC a summary of your total business income and expenses. With CalCal these are built automatically from your calendar — you just review and submit.
What is the final declaration?
Once all four quarterly updates are submitted, you make any remaining adjustments and send a final declaration confirming your full-year figures. This replaces the old self-assessment tax return.
Do I need an accountant to use CalCal?
No. CalCal is designed for people with no accounting background. Every step is guided, jargon-free, and built around a simple calendar workflow.
Can CalCal handle more than one business?
Yes. If you have rental income and a trade, or multiple businesses, CalCal sends separate quarterly updates for each income source from a single account.
Is CalCal free?
You can try almost everything in CalCal free for 10 days, including MTD self-assessment. After that, your records stay available to view until you subscribe. VAT submission and older XML self-assessment are not included in free access.
